Masonry Recommendations/Input for Brownstone Step and Facade Work

Hi, Our Co-op has started the process to get brownstone work done and are wondering if anyone out there has recommendations for people/companies not listed below and/or input for those listed: – Everlast (Mike Romeo) – price very competitive but only saw 1 very negative comment in The Brownstoner from 2008.  Any other input from anyone. – Brownstone Authfority (J Mos) – seemed nice and thorough but high price and some recent work we saw had discolorations/variations in the brownstone/stucco work (why does this happen?) – High Tech (Shafu sp?) – price competitive and co. has some good recommendations on Brownstoner but guy seemed pretty slick which gives one pause. Saw some discoloration/variation in the brownstone/stucco work in a photo of work recently done – Trying to locate contact info for following 2 co./people who have good recommendations on Brownstoner but cannot find Googling.  If u have, pls post:  Roy D. Construction  and Jose Gonzales.  Both of these people did work on South Elliott St in Brooklyn (Roy D. 11A, I think) and (Jose #s 19 and 21, I think) – Someone mentioned Excellent Contracting but didn’t mention whether they used them – has anyone and, if so, what do u think? workingonit, it will cost you in the north of 40-50k. maybe up to 80k depending on your building complexity.

Hi cg, i’ve received estimates from some of the contractors you mentioned (j mos, excellent, and thinking of getting one from roy d as well). they all do similar quality work but their prices vary quite a bit. would you mind giving your email address, it would be nice to get another opinion on the contractors before i take on a big project. if not i can give you mine.

Roy D. did the facade of a house on Sterling Place between 7th Ave. and Flatbush – number 149, I think. It’s on the north side of the street to the right of the blue house. Before Roy D’s work the facade was in pretty rough shape. I watched the workers during the process, which took a long time, but the final results are very good. They were able to match all the incised, parabolic and bas relief shapes to recrete crumbled detail. The workers seemed so in awe of their boss and were very polite when I asked them about the company. I will definitely call Roy D. when we get up the funds to redo the front of our place.

We actually had a positive experience with J.Mos of Brownstone Authority.  The exposed stone wall in our basement was leaking water and flooding the basement, the mortar was badly deterioted.  His bid was actually the lowest of 3, he and a few men came in on a Sat. morning and completely restored the mortar (chipped out old and put in new).  It not only looks beautiful but has kept out all but the tiniest spots of water even after all of this rain this year.  He also had a few other ideas as to where the water was coming – we haven’t had him try to repair these yet, but they were the best ideas anyone has had yet (better than the structural engineer or the waterproofing experts).

We do not recommend Brownstone Authority under any circumstances. We retained J. Mos to correct  sloppy pointing work with cement that was done on our bluestone stoop by some other bozo outfit. Mos’s “remedy” was to try and remove the cement with muriatic acid.  Not only did it not work, but years later, the bluestone is still flaking and separating in reaction to the application of that acid!  Definite thumbs down here.

If you need a good contractor then call Millad. We have used him and i got his number from this site, he is a good person to deal with. I can assure you that you will have good experience with his company.

guy who has done my masonry work over the years who I like and easy to deal with is Shahab — not sure what he calls his company because I don’t have the biz card with me. has done repointing, waterproofing, new sidewalk, built the masonry part of my stoop,  you can email me @hotmail.com if want my address to see work he’s done.  A friends coop has been using him last couple of years – I think that building is 12th street in park slope.
