How much does it cost to replace iron work in front of a brownstone?

http://cdn.brownstoner.com/51d30fa38f977-.jpg

I bought a brownstone in ft. greene about 5 years ago. hoping to tackle the facade in the next 5-7 years from now. I found this picture of my house from 1940 which shows nice beefy iron newel posts and railings. Where do I find these? how much do they cost etc. any suggestions are welcome. Neighbor who now lives next door (actually grew up in my house) remembers them when she moved to BKLYN, she was 10\. She also remembers them being ripped out up and down the block, probably for $. I would assume this is the original set from the house, built 1860.

This is the guy many Brooklyn Ironworkers get their newels and balusters from. Ask for Sonny. You’ll need to find someone to install. K & P International Trade,18 Steuben St, Brooklyn, NY— P: (718) 852-7127

Don’t get discouraged – a good portion of Fort Greene is within a landmark district.  If your home is included, it could potentially qualify for tax incentives and low interest loans to help get this sort of work done.  Consider it an investment in your neighborhood’s aesthetics!  Plus, it wouldn’t hurt your property value.

100% agree with “dorkofwindsor” – call salvage yards around Brooklyn.  Maybe even Build it Green in Gowanus, they seem to be on top of all sorts of demo going on around the borough.   If you have the budget, and can find a style you’d like to replicate, these guys are tops: http://www.architecturaliron.com/IHS/IHS.htm

an iron worker can get them for you, or you can find them yourself and have them restored and installed. As you enter Lowes through the 9th street entrance there is a salvage yard that has tons of this stuff.  you might want to get a large copy of that photo so they exact type can be seen, although chances are a few of your neighbors still have the originals if you look around.     I can’t give you an estimat of cost, but i can tell you unequivocally you get what you pay for with ironworkers.  My rec is Vinnie’s Italian Iron Works in Carroll Gardens.  You can actually visit their location and speak to them, they might have some salvage of their own.
