Cornice repair/replacement

We have a landmarked brownstone with a cornice that is decaying. I’m looking for advice on repair and/or replacement. I believe that it is wood and it has been repaired before with strips of metal but those have opened up and it’s leaking. I believe that it’s the original cornice.

What methods have people used to repair/replace and what should I expect cost-wise for doing so? I’ve seen that people make new ones out of wood, fiberglass, metal? Are there other options? I’d be happy with a repair but if replacing isn’t cost prohibited we’re going to consider it.

Any recommended contractors?

If your house is landmarked, you will probably need to repair rather than replace your cornice. The Landmarks commission will not accept a replacement that “resembles” the original. they will insist on an exact copy, which means most people work with what they’ve got. If you have repetitive elements, such as brackets, then select one to make a mold and recreate them using the original as the prototype. You can’t just buy an off-the-shelf fiberglass cornice and call it good.

Call CTG construction at 718-669-8305\. they did our cornice couple weeks ago. And they did a great job.
