How much should a small plumbing job cost?

We need to replace approx. 1 foot of a 4″ cast iron drain pipe (it has a hole in it).  The pipe is fully exposed and easily accessed, but is also very old (so it will need to be cut carefully).  Any sense of what we should expect to pay for this job?

Everyone makes this sound so complicated. We had a horizontal cast iron waste line with a fairly long crack/hole in the bottom that had rotted out. The pipe was in the cellar and fully accessible. It was not our main sewer pipe. We had that length of pipe, probably about six feet or so, replaced by a licensed plumber. The job cost about $400\. It was no big deal.

If the waste line is crumbling (paper thin where it holed out), then a saddle clamp won’t help. But they can be effective for quite some time if the pipe wall is sound.

Cutting old cast iron is a risky process. Years ago, we would snap the pipe with a chain break, but that sometimes would split an entire stack. Cast is very strong but also brittle. While the grit blades for a Sawzall do somewhat cut cast, now we usually use a grinder to make the cuts, and replace the section with no hub pipe. You don’t say if this is a horizontal or vertical stack, but a vertical stack must be supported by floor clamps or you risk snapping or falling iron. Normally I would try to replace the 4′ cast section rather than just a small piece, but if it is buried?? Waste line repairs are pricey because of the risks, so the technician must be experienced. $400.00?

It’ll be replaced with PVC pipe that is connected to the old cast iron with rubber gaskets and screw clamps (as long as it’s a 2-family or less)   Shouldn’t be more than a few hundred dollars.   That said, they make a putty that will harden and repair holes in pipes and it works extremely well on cast iron.  I’ve used it.

If the stack is rotting why would you cut out only the part that has an obvious hole? Now is the time to replace the entire stack, or at least the drain.
