Bed Stuy House

There was an Open House for 422 Bainbridge Street in Bed Stuy a few weeks ago. Here’s the listing: http://www.corcoran.com/nyc/Listings/Display/2528954 My husband and I were to attend but we decided that the house: – is too far east – is too close to the projects – probably needs more work upfront than we can do right now. Did / are we making a mistake not considering this house / location? The price is (very) right. How is the area? Crime? How safe is it?

I work with someone who lives in the Brevoort Houses.  They don’t consider it safe due to gun activity and are very specific about which way they take home and don’t diverge from that system.

Hey Expert, Ill have a nice 2 fam on that 400 Bainbridge block very soon,it needs some work but has every peice of original detail still intact and most of it un painted, just waiting for the building to be vacant. Thanks all for the comments. We’re open to houses in east Bed Stuy, just this one seemed too close to the projects for my Husband. I never thought about the J train as an option. Never really took it. Will look at the train map to see where it connects. Good to know that it’s fast and reliable.   Anyone go to the open house? In another post, someone said there were 70 people there. Probably in contract by now.

I live about a block away (Decatur btw Howard/Saratoga) — lived there for the better part of 4 years; safety hasn’t been an issue.  I’ve found good neighbors, and I am comfortable there at any hour (so is my wife).   The train situation:  the J/Z is your best bet.  It’s about a five minute walk to the Halsey stop from Bainbridge and Ralph.  The J/Z train runs express during rush hour.  This morning it took me 30 minutes from my doorstep to work at 42nd and Lex with transfer to express 4/5 at Borough Hall.   Hope that helps.  Good luck in your search.

There are really nice tree lined streets east of Malcolm X, like Dave says it is block by block. Try Macdonough, and Macon streets up to Howard (no further). And Decatur up to Saratoga. From what I have seen there are a lot of young couples and couples with children looking for homes in the East. As far as safety goes, I have not had an issue but I do drive and if I need to go to a corner store I do with no issues. As far as those projects are concerned,I don’t really hear much about it.  Supermarkets are an issue but if you own a car that should be a deal breaker.

DaveinBS makes a good point about the block by block thing eat of Malclm X/Reid Ave. (But seriously, there are many streets west of Reid that are block-to-block too.) We were warned of this when we started looking, but we couldn’t find anything afordable west of the X. So we expandined east of it and – forewarned and forearmed – found a great block/idyllic neighborhood, and cannot be happier. I am sorry I do not have any personal info/knowledge about the Bainbridge block you are looking at. The projects would make me a bit nervous. But the house itself looks nice. To me it is a bit counter-intuitive that there are some nice places opening up on Ralph between Bainbridge and Decatur, though. And a brewpub on Decatur and Ralph. So, maybe a trend is developing – who knows?

This house looks like it has lots of potentional. Can be converted to lower rental and upper duplex (I already did a great space plan in my mind). “The beauty or lack thereofof the street” um, did you forget what nabe I live in? I’ve been surrounded by schlock for so long, I no nothing about beauty. My husband’s big issue is safety. Plus, the C train is not ideal for him.

Seriously, it looks like a great place but I wouldn’t go east of Malcolm X for a number of reasons, not the least being proximity to the A/C and decent supermarkets. The beauty or lack thereofof the street is also a block-by-block thing east of Malcolm X
