Gas Authorization: how long does this take?
How long have you waited for a “gas authorization” from the DOB? I’ve been hitting the refresh on the BIS site for 3 weeks, and the DOB has given me zero indication that approval will be granted soon. This is for a 2-family home where the existing gas meters had been removed. National Grid will not install new meters without an authorization from the DOB, though both the gas test and plumbing rough-in inspections were passed without incident nearly a month ago. Folks I’ve talked to say “3 to 7 days” for authorization; I’ve also heard “24 hours”. Is there something I’m missing here? Thanks for your advice, Brownstoners!

Your plumber must request gas authorization from DOB. You should ask him about delay.

The issue is getting the gas company to show up in the first place. DOB recently changed the rules and now gas pressure tests are completed by the plumbing inspector, not the gas company. The test was conducted three weeks ago with a “PASS”, but the system won’t update with a “Y” for gas. Any idea how long this takes?

the guy from the gas company comes and light your boiler/water heater/dryer and makes sure none of the appliances leak. Probably has to match the list you have on the BIS website

Interesting! The gas company told me we only needed one appliance installed during the gas pressure test. Do we truly need all the appliances installed?

You need a Gas Final before DOB will issue a Blue Card. Once your appliances are connected you can call for a final inspection and then you’ll get your authorization.

Sounds like there was no inspection for the gas component so the authorization will never process. The green flag which ironically used to be a blue card is contingent on passing the gas test. Talk to your plumber.

thanks @transworld: under STATUS, the most recent inspections only state “INSPECTION CONDUCTED” and “PASS”. There is no “Y” in the “GAS” column, so no green flag to the gas company. How long did it take for your authorization to process with the DOB?

In bisweb, what doest is show under “PLUMBING INSPECTION”? You should click on last inspection, and see if it says something like:
RESULTS:
FLOOR REF NO SYSTEM COMPONENT TEST / INSPECTION RESULT
000 4865194 0 7 – GAS 7201 – GAS PIPING A72A – GAS AUTHORIZATION PASS
If it does, then the green flag was sent to gas provider. In my case, even so national Grid is my provider, meters had to be installed by ConEd. Not sure why, but you should make sure you are speaking to the right provider. With ConEd, I was able to monitor progress on the installation via their energy service website.
