"Existing Square Footage" and "Proposed Square Footage" same on Permit, what's up with the Extension?

One of my neighbors is doing a townhouse renovation.  The building permit researched online at the Building Dept.’s website states that the final square footage after the renovation will be the same as the current square footage.  Nonetheless, the contractor told me that a third floor  extension over the existing parlor floor extension will be getting built.  that amounts  to an additional 200 square feet.  Shouldn’t that be noted on the DOB’s website.  Also, the online application states no concrete work would be done.  Does this sound OK?

that’s a rediculous comment.  why should anyone be able to do an illegal  permanent renovation that infringes on the property rights of neighbors and others?  lets say the construction is illegal, am i supposed to ignore it?  this is a structure that i have to spend the rest of my life staring at.

I agree with eme and daveinbedstuy and greenman, neighbors should stop meddling in renovations that are already stressful, time consuming and expensive. It seems as if you are looking to bring problems to your neighbor. stop.  I just don’t understand why some neighbors do that. Is it jealousy?

don’t be that kind of neighbor. On that note, they’ll have a finial inspection after there done. I doubt they would try hiding a full extension without plans.

Either the data entry person at the DOB made a mistake (not uncommon at all) or it’s possible that some interior floor area was subtracted by creating a double height space somewhere.  I’m guessing it’s the first possibility.  I’ve seen so many weird things entered in on the DOB system.
