building inspector and outdoor deck
we built a steel deck with a licensed architect that is self certified and also a licensed contractor and it looks great. The architect went to the dob to close the job but our permit was randomly picked to be inspected. so, a dob person will be showing up next week to inspect the deck built on the back of the parlor floor overlooking the garden. my question is, will the inspector look at other things in our house besides the deck or is his sole purpose to make sure the drawings were complied to. the people we bought the house from changed the configuration of it and we are nervous that he will see it and write us up. ant experience from anyone out there when dealing with a inspector ? thanks in advance for your replies

So is it better that the homeowner be home when the DOB makes their inspection or not? After your desk is signed off on can you post some picture with contractor info? Thanks

I can guarantee you that the inspector did not pull whatever records on your house exist in the DOB archives. He didn’t study them. That being said, he would not normally know or particularly care if a proper permit was filed for work previously done. If however there exist conditions that violate code, he will know in an instant that no permit was obtained, because he knows it would never have been approved. So it boils down to, was this previous work done in a professional manner with respect for building code? If so, your chance of being hassled are slim.
