Building Code - Duplex Stairs with Egress on Each Floor

Hi there, I am connecting two apartments in a large building to make a duplex (ground floor + second floor). The front door from each apartment will remain accessible, meaning there will be a mode of egress on each floor. Additionally there is a fire escape from the 2nd floor windows. I cannot figure out what the interior stair code is in this case—I’d like to make the interior staircase connecting the two floors quite narrow if possible, but can’t figure out what the code is. Thanks in advance for any help folks can provide!

Thanks. In your case, you are talking about interior stairs in a home with only one mode of egress, right?

Back in the days when the DOB had homeowner nights, we were told that if we wanted to make our interior stairs less steep, we would also have to widen them to meet code. So if you plan to build a new staircase, I think it will have to meet code: at least 36 inches wide and meeting requirements for rise (vertical distance per step) and run (horizontal distance). Don’t take my word for it, but don’t get your hopes up.
