Adding stairs to combine / duplex apartments - to code?
We have thought about adding a set of stairs to combine two apartments that are on top of eachother.
Both apartments will retain their main door to the hallway and main staircase.
Does the interior set of stairs need to be to code? I know I have seen some tight spiral staircases in duplexed apartments that I can’t imagine are done to code. We probably want a standard staircase but we just might want to make narrower stairs than code to save some space.
Anyone know the deal with interior stairs?

If the staircase is shown to not be a part of the means of egress for the combined apts, and rather is identified as an open convenience stair, you may be able to obtain DoB approval. This is covered, a bit obtusely, in the Building Code Ch.7/ Section 708.2 where exceptions are identified. Good luck!
