2nd Boiler Addition Change CO of 1 Family?

We’ve lived in our 1-family four story home for 2 years now and finally have a chance to change from an oil to gas boiler. Our plumber recommended a second boiler for efficiency since the lower two floors has a hot water heating system for the laundry room and public spaces. The upper two are heated via steam and would have its own boiler.  Although not thrilled with the immediate cost, we’re thinking long-term but then wonder what happens to our CO when the plumber files with the DOB and they inspect?  Anyone been in this situation before?  Thanks in advance for the comments.

as stated above…a ludicrous idea…just mix down a hydronic zone below the water level, or use an indirect tank for a hydronic zone ( a pricier option) …for a free consultation, email me at the contact info given on my profile

two boilers means you will call your plumber twice more often to maintain them. So it is better solution for your plumber pocketbook.

I disagree with your plumber’s expensive suggestion. Just convert from oil to gas and buy one new steam boiler. The hot water heating zones can be taken from the steam boiler in a variety of efficient and effective ways. Adding a second boiler is going to be a filing nightmare, as you seem to realize. Also, the current steam boiler is sized to heat a specific amount of steam radiators and piping. Taking two floors worth of radiators in the laundry and common areas off of its load will render it oversized for the remainder of the system it will serve. There’s nothing efficienct about that. Oversized steam boilers create more problems than I can list right now.

I strongly advise you to re-evaluate and retool.
