Dumpster use? A few basic questions
Questions about dumpster use… 1\. Any permit needed from NYC? DOB? 2\. Will this tip off the DOB in some way to request an inspection of work being done? 3\. cost of dumster filled with cement and dirt? (to fit 25 yards) 4\. It seems one needs to hold the street space in advance somehow for the dumpster… correct? Thanks for all the advice and knowledge- perro5

Just did this. A few things: 1) Definitely call a few places. The price varried widely. Some wanted more when I told them it was dirt. Others charged less for dirt (go figure). Some charged less if the dirt was not in bags (so could be considered clean fill). 2) I found most of the companies shockingly helpful and easy to deal with. As someone who had never rented a dumpster, I thought I expect them to be uninterested in helping a one-off customer or give me the run-around, but I was wrong. 3) The permit process is just like slopemope and bond said: the company gets the permit for you and you never have to lift a finger. I think it was actually less than $80, but I don’t remember. 4) No worries about DOB (we would not have needed a permit for what we were doing anyway, but never heard from them). 5) Just talk to your neighbors. Even better, let them know that if they have some extra junk in their basement, they are welcome to throw it in after you are done filling it. You will end up with very happy neighbors. 6) If you cannot have it delivered during alternate side as slopemope says (which makes a lot of sense). Just parked in front of your house and use your car (and a neighbor’s if necessary) to block the space. It is amazing to watch them parallel park the actual dumpster. They make it look easier than parking a sub-compact.

Last time I actually priced it, a permit was 80 dollars and good for the week. Theoretically it is for one dumpster, but most people place multiple dumpster on the same permit, by that I mean not more than one dumpster at a time, but one dumpster after another. You can avoid a ton of problems by talking to your neighbors before hand and explain what’s going on, how long the dumpster will be there, asking if there’s a time that they shouldn’t pick up, (you’d be shocked at how many people call DOB when the baby’s nap is disturbed). Due to weight restrictions, you are only supposed to go with a ten yarder, but some companies will push this and let you use a 20 yarder. You’ll get a better price is it’s only dirt and or concrete, but then it has to be just that, no other debris at all. None. Nada. Zip. DOB does not respond to dumpster rentals, but obviously an over zealous inspector may see one being loaded and stop to check it out, but it’s a low risk. They usually have enough work to keep themselves busy and believe it or not, the average inspector is not looking to be a hard ass, and as SlopeMope points out, there are scenarios where you don’t need to file. Count on around $700 for a 20 yarder, maybe a little more since you’re only doing one. You can get a better price if you’re doing multiples.

For the street yes, you need a permit. The company you rent the container from should be able to obtain that permits within minutes online I believe they will place it there during alternate side street cleaning to reserve the space As to the tipping off the DOB, i will leave that to the insiders on the board. However, more often than not it is the neighbor that is annoyed and tattle tales that you don’t have a permit. I’m guessing there are probabally plenty of legitimate scenarios you could have a container and not require a work permit. As far as cost, at this point i’d call a container company and they can answer all of these common questions as well.
