Stainless steel cable railings -- uncoated?

We are redoing our deck railings and are planning to use cable railings between posts.  We would like to go with uncoated steel cable railings but someone we know made an offhand remark that they are dangerous and could cause injury.  Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with uncoated cable railings and whether there are serious safety issues that should concern us?  [P.S.  If the picture loads, that is obviously not our house.]

Use stainless steel type 316, 1/8″ or 3/16″ cable. This type of cable never frays and it’s very strong and corrosion resistant. Check with www.thecableconnection.com, these guys are very knowledgeable about cable railing.

What is the wire made of? Is it stainless steel? I have some in my house (not outside) and it never occurred to me that it could be ‘dangerous’).

There is coated wire that’s already a color & isn’t just clear.  I’d be surprised, though, if there weren’t a u.v. block in the transparent covering.

Thanks, Steve.  The dilemma is that we are not using a complete manufacturer’s system.  Our contractor is planning to attach the connectors or fasteners or whatever they are called to some existing posts.  He says that the plastic coated wire will slip and that it will yellow from sun exposure.  But we don’t want to pay all that extra money for a complete cabling system.

use the vinyl coated.  I just ran some in my back yard as a support for something and using bare wire never crossed my mind.  Occasionally a strand will break free from the rest in a wire rope and that broken one becomes a painful problem later.  I cannot say it is dangerous and may be less of a problem when used as a railing – but when these strands break and are handled, they hurt.  Think a staple or pin in a finger.
