Shade Options for a Deck

We have a deck off our living room that we need to shade somehow without cutting off the great natural light to our living room.  At first I was looking into shade sails but I’m afraid it would leave our living room in the shadows.  I guess the other option would be a big freestanding umbrella (the deck is 12’x12′) but it gets kind of windy on the 3rd floor and I assume we’d need a really heavy umbrella base that I’d have to move around the deck as the sun changes direction.  What’s our best option for getting some shade on the deck without taking away the natural light pouring into our living room?  Have others had good experiences with shade sails or freestanding umbrellas on a windy deck?

I bought an 11’x11′ shade sail 2 years ago for our very sunny deck, and love it. We used to sit under the big umbrella all the time, and now we have a new seating area. It doesn’t provide total shade…light still comes in. They also come in a trianglular shape, which might be better for your purpose. Got it for a great price on overstock.com. Steve
