Rear Deck
We want to build a deck out back from the parlor floor. I am thinking it will probably be a L shaped deck that goes the entire width of the house, which means it will be made of steel. I have seen some already on house and a all steel design doesn’t always look so good. We would consider a wood deck but the width of our house (17 feet) limits us. I know we need permits and architects and such. , My question is does anyone know of a good team of builders/contractors/archirtects that we could call ? any other experiences that we could learn from ? . Thanks for your answers in advance.

My company, Urban Exteriors, has built many of these type decks. Give me a shout, and I can come by to discuss. Steve www.urbanexteriors.biz

We covered our steel frame / steel grating deck with Ipe, so it is in fact 100% structural w/o the wood, with a wood skin on top. Our stairs actually don’t have steel grating, just a steel support flange under the Ipe tread – I was worried about this but passed inspection aok.

We did a pressure treated wood and steel combo as well. It was built by Robert Syracuse (610-350-9335 / 13syracuse@gmail.com), his crew did an awesome job. The stairs are steel (not shown in this pic) as well as the structure. The flooring is wood. This picture is sort of mid-project, we ended up painting the railings a blueish-gray and the edge was finished off. We have a 3′ clearance to the right (and used the length of the yard rather than the width) and the steel stairs to the left, that was our solution to the non-combustible issue.

Also, DIBS was that picture taken right after install? If not how do you get your wood to not weather to that dullish grey that normally happens?

. So the wooden screen in the deck above, though at the property line, is OK?

DIBS – your deck points out one approach that we take sometimes, doing the entire deck with wood, except for that 3 feet at the property line, and doing that in metal grating, or concrete or stone pavers. Yours came out real nice there.
