need advice on re-staining deck

I’ve check the forum and found advice on cleaning and sealing a deck but none appear to deal with a deck that was stained (4 years ago) and needs to be restained.  Do the same cleaning methods/products apply for a deck that has already been stained/sealed and needs to be re-stained? (I think it’s pressure treated pine.)

OP here.  Thanks everyone for the additional info.  The original stain was Cabot oil based with no separate sealer applied on top.  I’ve e-mailed Cabot to see what they recommend and hope they respond before it’s too cold to do the work this year!

I used Restore – a – Deck 2 part cleaner last spring on Ipe that had been stained/sealed previously with really good results, but nothing really penetrates Ipe so not sure how it would do on PT.

Both Thompsons and Olympic make satin/sealers.  What I’m talking about is what I think you originally referred to which would be a shellac or a polyurethane  seal on top of a stain.  T & O are not sealers in that sense.  Do not use any polyurethane on an exterior surface like a deck unless you want to sand it when it needs resurfacing.

Never seal a deck.  Just stain it.  Use an oil base if it’s available (outlawed in some states).  As far as prep, you just want to make sure it’s clean and free of any sort of moss or algae type film and DRY

If that deck has been sealed and any of the sealer remains, it will be tough to restain – at least in spots.  Aside from that, you should use Olympic deck cleaner.  Spray it on, broom it around, and rinse it off (follow the directions).   then stain and seal. Steve
