Getting wood sealer drippings off concrete
Specifically Olympic Waterguard water proofing clear sealer. Concrete isn’t sealed. A sloppy worker left bits of this wood sealer on the concrete deck floor resulting in brown blotches and it’s not responding to normal concrete cleaners. Powerwashing after using concrete stain remover hasn’t helped. Any advice on how to best minimize these while still “doing no harm”?
Thanks,
J

Thanks, all. Poultice definitely not the answer after sealer has dried. Before I posted here I got a resounding chorus of Muriatic acid so I very conservatively used that, and found that there was no happy medium where much of the stain was lessened that didn’t affect more of the concrete around it than was acceptable, though my final solution of several very diluted applications and very gentle stiff brushing (not wire) repeatedly seemed to at least help somewhat. Now I’m in the mindset espoused by nyc_sport where I just have to wait it out and have faith that it will look better next year. My lesson, long ago learned but not always followed: throw out the lowest bid on any job. Period.

It will not disappear, other than with time. You can use various poultices to minimize the appearance, absorbing the oil. It will not completely solve your problems. But as the idiot who splashed substantial teak oil on my fancy bluestone deck can attest, I tried everything, and after 4-5 poultice applications, power washings and a lot of rain, it was gone enough that I did not still care. Now, a year later, the stains are totally gone, and all that is left is some power washing wounds. So be careful with that power washer.

from experience, do not put muriatic acid on the oil stains. the acid will not react with the oil – it will float over it and react with the concrete around it. Been there, done that.

Muriatic acid might work. It’s used to etch concrete before sealing/painting.

typical sealers are like an oil and the way to remove them is with a poultice. Steve
