Door question - fiberglass, wood etc
Any suggestons for a type of outswing door for the high second floor deck we are having put up (and then doing a window to door conversion)? We can only do outswing since there will be a tight kitchen just inside. Our contractor is suggesting plexiglass and mentioned ThermaTru and I’ve also seen a Marvin wood door on houzz that looked good (and possible contractors have mentioned Anderson). The goal is good weatherproofing/insulation, good light into the kitchen, and then security is less critical since it is an enclosed backyard so not super easy for someone to break in via back vs front. (And it will be alarmed). I’d love doors that either are mostly glass or have panes that mirror the old brownstone we live in – big bottom square pane and even bigger top rectangular pane …but they mostly seem to be all glass or “types” that don’t mirror the brooklyn brownstone style. Any suggestions? Pictures? Thanks for any input

Have tried about a hundred firms here in Toronto. The main lesson I learned from my search is that, don’t just believe only on the ads and reviews posted live. Better if you have any friends/relatives who did a similar project, get assistance from them. Only solid proof will add value. Especially in the case of home improvement covering the [installation of replacement windows and doors](http://www.clerawindows.com/clera-benefits), kitchen cabinets, bathroom faucet or anything. Direct reference is the best thing you can believe with.

This is a warning to anyone looking to use Kennedy Renovation Company! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! We have been scammed by Jeff Kennedy and he has taken our 50% deposit without installing our windows for our brownstone. He was responsive in the beginning (July 2013), even offering to do all the paperwork with Landmarks to obtain the permit to replace the windows. He was so confident that we would be quickly approved that he even stated, in writing, that the deposit is refundable in the event of permit denial. He gave us updates and assured us of his high standards to let us know that he was dissatisfied with the quality of the windows and had to re-order them, but after weeks of excuses, we followed up with Landmarks, who had no records of his application. After confronting him about this, he sent us emails of his frustrations with LPC (even though he mailed the application in, not hand-delivering as they requested) and then eventually stopped responding to us for updates. We have requested our refund back numerous times and we have not heard back from him since November 2013\. His landline and cell phone are now disconnected.

ThermaTru is a very good door. My company, Kennedy Renovation Company, uses ThermTru a lot and have had nothing but good feedback. They make several types of doors including steel, fiberglass, composite and they also offer various types of glass units. Probably 250 different combinations to choose from. Marvin is a good door, however with extreme weather conditions here in NY, the wood, over time, could warp or rot if not maintained properly. My suggestion is ThermaTru. Jeff Kennedy
