Deck color and security gate question
Has anyone painted their metal deck anything other than black? I saw a yellowish brick building with a sky blue fire escape that looked great and I am wondering about painting it that color. Also, does anyone have a glass door to their deck and then a security gate? I am wondering how to configure the gate – bars then metal mesh which is ugly but secure, or just bars and then a deadbolt that has to be unlocked with a key. I am interested to know how other people have handled this. (Joe at Lopopolo just finished the deck off my parlor floor. He did a fantastic job and I will post photos another time. I highly recommend him and his crew.)

I have similar questions about how to do a screen/storm door on the outside that allows light in and an interior door that also weatherizes the interior and lets light in – in other words, how to get enough light when wanted, enough protection against the heat in teh summer and cold in the winter, and also protects against intruders if we want to lock the doors, and against bugs when we want to leave the doors open (we have the infamous mosquitos and it’s almost a non-starter to go outside after mid-July and we plan to fight back via zappers this summer)

I am interested in this very much as well, as I am going to embark on the same project soon. My q to the posters above : did you incude a screen door to protect against mosqutoes with your deck door/gate somehow? How?

We just finished our deck (the floor is cedar, the rails are metal). The rails were painted a dark blue-ish gray (like charcoal??), which works very nicely with the metal stairs. We also installed a gate for the door that accesses the deck. Its pretty basic looking, vertical bars (had to paint them black since our prexisting window bars were black), and 2 horizontal bars with a deadbolt and key. I know it’s a fire hazard to have a lock that requires a key, but the alternative would’ve covered the glass door too much, so we’re taking that risk.
