Building a deck

We are in the process of submitting drawings to the DOB for a deck that spans the entire width of our brownstone. It will be metal with a wood inlay (should be very cool) A couple of questions: we need to have a asbestos check to see when they put in the door if there is any asbestos. has anyone had this done ? does he go through the entire house or does he just concentrate on the area in question ?second question, our architect  is self certified but I heard through this forum that usually means someone from the DOB inspector will show up at some point. Is this true ? In terms of a deck on the back of the house what will the DOB inspector be inspecting ? does he go through the whole house ? or just look at the drawing specs that have been filed? thanks in advance.

You pay for the inspection, usually by floor, and he only certifies that area. He works for you, and there are no…”imperial entanglements”. AirPlus Environmental Services Inc. 433 Kingston Ave. #7 Brooklyn, NY 11225 I have used him quite a few times, sorry I don’t seem to have his number.

The asbestos inspection is generally limited too the areas of work- the places where ACM will potentially be disturbed. All renovations,  regardles of scope, are required to do this.  You shouldn’t sweat it. In Brooklyn, many times a self certification will trigger an audit (ostensibly because some architects abused their self cert privileges).  However, an inspector will come if you are filing an alteration type 1 regardless. If that is the case, they can call out anything they see that is not code compiant and make you fix it. Your architect really should be able to answer these questions in depth.

In my experience, they only test the areas that will be disturbed.
