Any idea what to use to protect/seal my deck tiles?

http://cdn.brownstoner.com/4defd19cbb0b7-

I bought these outdoor deck tiles at IKEA and the directions say to seal them with oil, but doesn’t specify what type. I know IKEA sells an oil, but if it’s the quality of the rest of their stuff, I’ll splurge for something more quality that will help them last longer outside. Any ideas? They will be outside on my metal deck and I believe they are Acacia wood. Here’s the product link if that helps any: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20165486 Thanks!

I put these out last summer (over landscape cloth, on the ground). I didn’t seal them at all. This Spring they were looking kind of faded, so I put on a coat of Olympic Wood Protector Waterproofing Sealer, in Honey Gold color. It went on easily with a roller and looks good.

So IKEA uses the same wood for deck tiles that Moses used to build the ark of the covenant- cool. Acacia naturally has oils (like teak and ipe) that are evaporated when kiln dried and left out in the sun to bake. Ipe oil, teak oil, or the more generic “tropical hardwood oil” will replenish the woods natural resistance to water and bugs. This type of finish is a penetrating type. These oils replenish the dried wood much like moisturizer soothes dried skin. A topical finish, such as spar varnish, contains UV absorbers and protects the wood much like sunscreen protects your skin from damage. I prefer a product like Sutherland Welles exterior polymerized tung oil, which will both quench the wood and form a topical coat if it is done in several applications. This product contains both UV absorbers and mildewicides. Probably overkill for a deck, but if you want something that will last and look natural… It is availaible at Mazzone hardware on Court Street.

I’d recommend Waterlox tung oil. It’s quick, painless, effective, and safe. Runs about $25 a quart.

Check out Deck-Doc and Ipe Oil decking oils. See if any of those would be appropriate for Acacia. Good luck!

OP here- yes I could try that too, but I almost feel like I get better advice on here than by asking in Home Depot (if I can even find someone to ask there). There are just so many more knowledgeable people on this site that have experience doing a simple job like this— where are all my knowledgeable people?!!! I know you’re all out there!
