Giant Tree vs Work Crew
http://cdn.brownstoner.com/50c8d8ba27e82-.jpg
My neighbor across the street from me is having their sewer pipe replaced or repaired. The work crew has dug a giant hole in front of my house and across the street. Normally I would not even notice the work but the hole that they are digging is directly in front of a GIANT tree. I am worried that they are undermining it’s root system. We have lost a lot of trees on the block due to the tornado and Sandy and this one has thankfully managed to survive. The tree is easily twice as tall as any of the brownstones on the block and if it comes down it is taking a few homes with it and mine is in its direct path. The pic is of the last tree that came down, act of God is one thing, but I want to avoid a man made situation. Is there anything the crew or my neighbor can do to make sure this doesn’t happen? Are there ways to shore up a tree?

If a permit was obtained to perform work on or near a street tree, the ORIGINAL is required to be on site. An original, not a photocopy. All excavation work done within 50 feet of a city tree requires a permit. Utility relocation and repair requires a Certified Arborist onsite during all utility work. If you’ve seen no evidence of arborist, permit, etc., call an arborist, who will have the knowledge to assess the situation, and an inside track on how to quickly and effectively address the situation.

When I had my sewer line replaced last month, I was told the company had to file a permit specifically related to the tree infront of my house (not on top of, but near, the digging). If your neighbor has the right permits they probably had to do the same.

If you’re worried the sewer work will cause irreparable harm to the tree, try calling an arborist first for assessment. Lawrence Schultz would be a good choice. He’s local, despite the area code: 267-241-6858\.
If necessary, follow up according to instructions on this page: http://www.nycgovparks.org/trees/tree-damage-arborcide
