Frame house 2nd floor bedroom weight load
There’s a wrought iron bed I’d like to buy for a small bedroom on the 2nd floor of our 100+ yrs old frame house in Victorian Flatbush. I estimate the bed + mattress + mother-in-law to sum up to approx. 20 pounds per square foot (400 pounds over 3120 square inches, or 22 square feet). Does it sound like an easy weight load for the 2nd floor of a very old wooden house, or could it be a strain?

Twenty pounds per sq foot is nothing. But the weight of the bed is carried by less than a square foot, the posts where the bed meets the floor. Still not a problem since these old houses were overbuilt using joists with true dimenstions.

should be fine if the joists have not been hacked up.
