Facade Suggestion: How to Cover This?

We had a hideous metal canopy over the front door on the front of this building (see photo) that was in danger of collapsing. We removed it today and are left with a few holes in the brick facade. The remaining two I-beams will be cut off shortly. I don’t believe that a “repair” of this area will ever blend in with the surrounding bricks. It’s been suggested that we cover the area which is roughly five feet long with a rectangle of some other material (e.g. wood, granite, stone etc) and possibly put the building numbers on it (although five feet wide is way more than we need for numbers) and/or a light fixture or two. I’m wondering if any Brownstoners have had a similar issue and if so, how did you solve it? Or, you may just have a better idea of how to turn this lemon into lemonade. Thanks.

I’ve seen this done well in other cities where rowhouses had porches that were removed, leaving the same problem, with a piece of wood (or something that looks like it could be wood, but may actually be something more weather resistant like vinly or metal), with trim at the edges to ease the starkness that would be there if you just slapped up a board. Painted the same color as the brick, it blends in and looks OK. It is up to you to decide if you want to put numbers on it…if you do, consider painting it a contrasting color once it is up.  If you go for lights, those ones that come out on a hook of metal, like the ones on Frannys pizza on flatbush near st. Marks Pl. look good on this sort of facade.
