DOB Development Challenge Process

Does anyone have experience with the Department of Buildings Development Challenge Process under which members of the public are able to challenge new real estate development projects on zoning grounds?  Has anyone used this process to encourage/force developers to build in ways that are harmonious with existing steeetscapes?

If you believe that the project’s taller than allowed by zoning…doesn’t have the rear yard or setbacks required by zoning…or otherwise doesn’t meet zoning requirements, then the challenge process is for you. If you just don’t like the look of the proposed building, or think it’s too big (even though it meets zoning requirements), then you’d be wasting your time as well as everyone else who’d be involved.

The challenge process is only for forcing a review to make sure the proposed meets the zoning code. Call DOB, they can walk you though the process.
