Contractor recs for full frame house rehab

It’s been a while since we did our last major reno. We just closed on a house, are working on plans with our architect, and need to start lining up estimates from contractors. We have one we like but he’s in the midst of a huge job and doesn’t sound like he’ll have time for us.  I know a lot of people like Transcend and I’m happy to consider them but I’d like to interview some more.  We’re waiting on our demolition permit so we can start clearing out the dreck. I know a lot of contractors don’t like architects so someone who isn’t going to get pissy about someone else’s plans would be great.  I know there are lots of posts here about this, but would love to hear recent exeperiences. IMHO these projects require synergy. The GC is the pointman. Its his job to work through potential conflicts (personality included)  and make it seamless for the client. It is unrealistic to think that there will never be diferences. Its how this is managed that counts.

 Regarding your statement  “I know a lot of contractors don’t like architects…” At least for myself, contractors  just don’t like **bad** architects. It is a pleasure to work with an architect who knows what he is doing and is not afraid to ask questions. On a major renovation you are going to need people who can work together. It can be a nighmare for everyone involved otherwise.

Hi Miss718,  I hired an architect first (he only did plans – did not participate beyond that) then I interviewed about 4 contractors – almost all were fine with that arrangement.  I decided to go with All Renovation Construction solely because they were the only outfit to send me an itemized estimate per floor (3 story brownstone gut renovation) – it was extremely detailed and basically blew the other GC’s estimates away (other guys sent bulk quotes per floor).  It just seemed like All Renovation “got it” and made the effort to really explain the work to me in person and on paper, it was my first experience with a major rehab so it really helped to team up with someone who was professional from start to finish.
