Where to dig up real estate info on local co-ops?
Long time Brooklyn resident but first time homebuyer here. Looking for some advice on the co-op buying process in the Slope/ Greenwood area. Went to an open house a few weeks back for an apartment that seems to need some cosmetic work, but not in too bad shape and on a great block. I’ve looked the building up on various sites and all I can find is that the apartment has been on the market more than 6 months. Given how “hot” South Brooklyn continues to be, I’m worried as to why a seemingly good deal has been unsold for a long period of time. Any good sites or resources for more digging? I tried DOB and the bedbug registry, along with the big real estate listing sites but no luck. I don’t yet have a realtor representing me so I’m not sure if hiring someone would get me more info.

I would google the address and sees what comes up, Also look at articles that can provide you some insight in obtaining information in preparation of purchasing a coop. An article posted on my blog provides some info on this top. The link is http://philipjlavender.wordpress.com/2007/07/22/purchasing-a-cooperative-apartment-due-diligence/ Good luck.

It’s been my experience that the length of time a property has been on the market on those sites is not accurate. You can, however, get accurate information about sale prices and dates of sale (not how long something has been on the market) from the DOB.

It’s good to research as much as possible, but I wouldn’t be suspicious based on time on the market. That neighborhood is hot for houses, not necessarily for coops, and definitely not for smaller apartments. (Don’t know the size of the one you describe.) Did you talk to the listing broker at the OH? Sometimes, they’ll actually share useful information, though they have a responsibility to the seller. Working with a broker will only get you more info on that property if they have more info on that property–unlikely. But working with someone who knows the neighborhood well and whose judgment and honesty you trust is a good thing.
