Adding skylights to top floor unit in coop

I’m considering the possibility of trying to add skylights to my top-floor unit in a coop building.  What would be a standard process to seek approval from the board for such an improvement?  What assurances should I provide them that leaks and repairs to that area would be my responsibility?  Could I offer to buy more shares in the corporation?  I’m a novice to these things, so any advice would help.

Note as well that even if everything is A-OK with the board there are very strict FDNY regulations now concerning fire-fighter’s access for landing zones and clear travel paths across the roof.  Best to get plans of the roof and verify with an architect or code consultant that you will not be impinging into any of these areas.

good answer but you should also get soem quotes first before you present to the board, this way the contractors will be able to answer position/size/engineering requirement questiosn which will be the first words out fo the boards mouth when they reply. do this first.

You should write a letter or email to the board, stating that you request to install a skylight and of course will pay for all expenses that the board would require in its process for approval, as well as any maintenance expenses in the future related to such.  If you anticipate that they will be curmudgeons, you could also state that you would be happy to provide for an opinion of a qualified engineer if the board is at all concerned about any structural issues.  Finally, you believe that a skylight would add value to the unit and the unit and therefore the building values going forward.  Good luck
