Opening Fireplace?

Does anyone have experience with opening their fireplace in their apartment or building? What are the fire codes with this? Or taking out bricks from the wall to use the old flue area as shelf space? I have seen one brownstone owner add a wine rack and butcher block island to the old fireplace area. Thanks

You may need your flue sealed and there may be other issues that can come up, your best bet is to contact a licensed chimney professional, i have used big apple chimney before and would recommend them, they advertise on brownstoner. give them a call, i trust, they can help you figure it out.
