The house was new construction, so the fireplace was designed with a recessed cutout so the bluestone slab is perfectly flush with the floor (walnut). It was laid in some thinset, but that was just to make up for any unevenness in the stone face. That stone is not going anywhere and did not need to be held in place.

Did you just lay the bluestone on cement?
Mine is going to be on the floor – I’m not down with those raised hearthstones.

I used bluestone in my weekend house, which I think looks great, is a bit less formal than marble, and largely indestructible. The hearth in my apartment is polished concrete, but while that fits well with the industrial loft it is probably not for a brownstone. Soapstone would be a great choice. I used it for countertops. Great coloration, etc., but you must be able to live with some chips/scratches as it is comparatively soft.

Thanks DIBS.
“Lay it in a bed” also does not trigger the filter.

Yes, mopar. “Hearthstone” by definition does not include wood. LOL
I’ve used marble mostly. You can get it polished but I think honed looks better. I have also laid fieldstone in cement for a more rustic (and cheaper) look. Soapstone would look good too
Any stone place will cut you a piece of stone and it shouldn’t be more than a few hundred bucks. Lay it in a bed of cement or a thick bed of quickset.

Mopar, thanks for narrowing the hearthstone choices down to various types of stone. Any further opinion before I take a chainsaw to your bush avatar?

Anything that won’t catch fire. Slate, tile, marble, etc. Not wood.
