Repairing wooden windows?
We have all wood windows. The exterior putty on some of them has flaked off and water has damaged some of the wood, warping it so that some windows don’t close very well (or hardly at all). I am interested in having these sashes rebuilt or repaired instead of replacing the entire window. Waiting to hear back from Heights Woodworking, but is there anyone else out there who would rebuild a wooden window sash. And once that is done, any recs on someone to reputty and repaint the exterior of all the windows? I would actually like someone to look at the wood frames first and assure me they are in good condition, before proceding with the sash repair. Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

Keeping your old windows is actually more energy efficient and sure looks a whole lot better and is way cheaper than replacement windows. The book “Working Windows” is the bible on window repair. Also see Door Sixteen for inspiration. I do know someone who does this work, but I am not allowed to make recommendations because I work for Brownstoner. Very sorry.

There is a tutorial online at This Old House. Essentially it’s not that difficult to DIY, but it’s horrendously expensive to have done.

Our building is over 150 years old and on a landmarked block. I know there are new options out there, but since it is only 5 windows that are damaged for sure (2 front, and 3 rear), I was thinking that repairing those instead of replacing all would be cheaper. But I am open to all options. Mostly it is one sash that is damaged per window. fexleycb – what do you mean by brickmold and inserts? I’m still learning window language. I am hoping to leave what I refer to as the exterior wooden window frame, and replace upper or lower window sashes.I’ve reached out to Window-Fix, Air-Flo Windows, and Bieber Architectural Windows – does anyone have experience with these companies? The Tinker Wagon could not do the job, but was very friendly.

Have you considered leaving the brickmold and just dooing window inserts? Could be a good solution. I had it done on 2 of the windows of my landmarked building in Fort Greene and am very happy with the results. I wish someone had alerted me to this option before I replaced my other windows.

Is your building historic or is it the original architecture you are hoping to preserve? The work you’re looking for can be done but will likely cost more than replacement windows. I’m not making a case for replacement windows and I don’t sell or rep them. That said, there are modern window replacement options that are designed to at least closely match many existing architectures. The cost would likely be less and the energy savings would be an added kicker. In the directory, ‘Tinkers Wagon’ advertises the kind of service you describe. I don’t know them and have never spoken with them. I only mention them because the services they articulate on their site sound similar to what you describe. Hope that helps! Matt R www.nyc-hs.com
