Fair cost for a Do-it yourself Course?

Greetings B-Stoners, I know some of you have taken various home repair courses some of which were sponsored by Neighbrhood Housing Services of East Flatbush. Given the tight budgets of households in the nation these days, what do you think is a fair cost for a Home Repair Course $170, $200, or $275? I checked classes offered by Medger and NYC Techical College and they offer classes for a minimum of $300. Do you think people are more interested in whole courses or piecemeal topics such as tiling or faucet repair?

Greetings All, I appreciate your comments. I wanted to get a sense of what would be a fair price considering the tight economy. I looked around at some Home Maintenance Courses offered by other places, namely continuing Education Coures. NYC Technical offers a 12-class repair series at $50 per class. You’re not mandated to take the entire series, however, if your a beginner I can’t see you taking less than 4 classes. The NHS class is currently at six weeks for $160. @honeycut (Love that uername)– NHS does offer a Electrical and Plumbing course. This was done to cator to those who want those particular topics. @pheightslady — The home repair courses target mainly homeowners, although, all are welcome if your 18 and above. And as for low income and homeownership, that is a challenging prospect unfortuantely in New York City these days. I appreciate your input.

(Sorry if this is a re-post – my first answer seemed to disappear) I think that the NHS classes are really cheap for what they offer. To Kensingtonian’s point, the $20 per class is $20 for three hours (2 hours?) of very hands on learning – I spackled, tiled, and power-sawed for the first time. Definitely worthwhile to me. Setting pricing depends on whom you are targeting. I think that many folks can afford to pay more, but NHS does target a lower-income population. My understanding is that NHS loses money on its classes. To that end, maybe it’s worth having some sort of two tier pricing. For example, you can list the low base price but note in the materials that the course actually costs $X to run and ask students to consider making a tax deductible donation for the difference. Or list a higher price and note in the materials that a number of “scholarships” are available.

I took both the basic and the advanced home maintenance classes through NHS and they were great and a fair price. I would pay more, however, for classes that were focused soley on electrical and plumbing. If you offer that I will be the first to sign up! thanks!

I think your course is great but charging more than 150 which is what I paid is going to be hard as justifying 20 bucks per class where you only get small time for hands on is not worth it. I suggest you stick with 150 mark. Especially in this economy
