Where to find millwork for stairs?
http://cdn.brownstoner.com/4e0baae94be61-
I need to replace the millwork from the edge of the stairs in my brownstone. In particular, I need a couple of pieces like those shown in the picture. Too expensive to have done custom since I need so few – are things like this available somewhere?
Thanks.

It’s a shame I have thrown out so many of these.
Your original looks like one piece, but we will make our replacements from two pieces.
We fabricate the top from 5/4 poplar. Expensive at Dykes but you need very little.
Take your sample to the router bit display and purchase a rounding bit that matches bullnose. It looks like 3/8″ or 1/2″.
What I normally do is make up much more than I need, because in one of the later steps I usualy mess up a few of my tries.
So
1\. Route top quarter round say 36″ long
2\. Flip over and route bottom edge w/ same Quarter round bit.
3\. Attempt to Route around the corner on top.
4\. Flip over and attempt to Route around the corner on bottom
5\. If #3 or #4 throw a chunk or mess up, cut off end only and retry #3&4
6\. If #1-4 are OK, cut off miter a little long at other end.
7\. Try it up against the stair tread. If it is all right but just too long, make a 2nd cut at 45 to trim for length.
8\. Make bottom piece from shoe molding, just copy miters from sample piece.
9\. I like to pre drill, counter sink screws for 5/4 piece, finishing nails for shoe

Hey rb:
Maybe you should get yourself a router. It looks like you’re trying to restore a brownstone — a good router might be a worthwhile investment. If you’re not sure whether or not this would be too involved for you, HD and Lowe’s have lots of books like the bestselling _Router Magic_ that describe how to tackle projects of this kind. Then, for the price of the book, you’ll know if a router is for you.
If it isn’t, you’ll have to convince Steve or somebody to make ’em for you.
Good Luck!

HD sells those ends though they may not be sized like yours. As for the trim on the underside, I would just purchase (or make) cove molding to attach there. If I were stuck, I would make these, they would not be that difficult though we have machines for such. Steve http://brownstoner.staging.wpengine.com/tinkerswagon
