Using a Summer Cover?

I just had my fireplace done- I loved my contractor (AJ Chimney out of Queens- I can’t say enough about how wonderful they were, and reasonably priced too! 718.440.0751). Now my gas logs are on the way and I’m pondering how to cover the opening. I looked at screens online, but they are so big for the small Victorian coal fireplace openings. Anyhow, I have the original Summer cover with the vents that open in the back. Can you keep these on the fireplace when you have it lit? Or does it get too hot? I’m certainly a newby when it comes to having a fireplace. If I can’t use it, does anyone know a good source for contextual, in scale screens?

While my dog is a freaking evil genius, several of the dogs I have had here as guests are dumb as a post, some with feathery tails, too. No dog has ever burned themselves on my gas fire, nor have they chased the cats into a fiery doom. If there aren’t babies in your house, I wouldn’t worry too much.

Why even bother covering it with the gas logs???  Obscures the view.
