Small asbestsos removal job

What should I expect in costs to hire someone to remove asbestos from a single exposed pipe (2″ wide, 85″ long)?  It’s in a bathroom of a coop unit I just bought, and while the asbestos is contained in a soft wrapper, that has some punctures and I think it will be very hard to put in the new floor and tiling I want to do without disturbing the wrapper.   Recommendations on removers who will do a small job? Thanks.

Thanks for the KAM recommendation.  I had it tested, it was asbestos, and it crumbled completely upon cutting it.

You can test for asbestos inexpensively. Call KAM Labs located in Long Island City.  They’ll give all the information you need. The test should cost around $20.00\. If you decide to remove it yourself, you should use a spray bottle to wet the material down in order to stop any fibers from getting into the air.

Are you sure it’s asbestos? Seems unusual in a bathroom. (Much more common in basements, boiler rooms). If it were me, I’d get a decent respirator (not just a dust mask) and do it myself. Some may chime in with hysterical responses about your risk of mesothelioma, but it’s really not kryptonite. I wouldn’t recommend doing it on a regular basis, but once or twice in your life pulling down 7 feet of inslulation, taking reasonable precautions, is not going to kill you. Leinster Contracting has been recommended here for asbestos removal jobs, but I wouldn’t spend the money for such a small job.
