Removing a Fire Escape

I am looking at a four-story brownstone that is zoned as a two family, but is currently configured as an illegal four family. There is currently a fire escape in the back. I am looking to convert it to a garden rental with a owners triplex. Will I be able to remove the fire escape? Any ideas of how much this should cost.
