Recommendation for wood stain mix
I’m looking for a company that can mix one quart of wood stain. I can provide a sample of the wood with the stain color needed and a sample of the wood the new stain will be used on. Can someone recommend a company, or person who can do this? I will apply the stain myself, just need someone to mix it. I already tried Abbott paints, but they only mix a minimum of 1 gallon, are quite expensive and not easy to get to (i.e. weekdays only, located in greenpoint and sunset park). Thank you.

Frankly I was shocked Roz. I really liked Cortez and had quite a bit of confidence in him – which is why I didn’t hesitate to give him a cash deposit. I continued calling him without him responding for a few months before giving up. I got another carpenter/contractor named Taz (who I found recommended on Brownstoner) to do the job and was very happy with the work he did for me.

I’m sorry to hear that, fexleycb. Cortez can be unresponsive but I’ve never known him to be dishonest.

Uh – think twice before calling Cortez Williams. I used him for a small job (based on a Brownstoner rec), liked him and contacted him to do a second hob for me. I gave him a cash deposit ($150 bucks) and he disappeared. I called him, left messages etc but finally gave up. He took my $150\. Pretty surprising since he seemed like such a good guy.

Try Cortez Williams: (347) 245-4606\. Tell him Roz recommended him. He’s busy and can be hard to reach but he knows everything about refinishing and staining wood. However he may not be interested unless you give him the entire job. As the posters above have indicated, working with color stains is tricky and he may not want to take responsibility for the stain being applied by someone other than him.

As DIBS pointed out, this is not something you can just mix up based on a photo or sample. There are a ton of different factors, for instance: species of wood (pine, cherry, mahogany, etc); type of wood (heartwood and sapwood take stain differently); type of top coat (oil, shellac, french polish); whether wood conditioner will be used; etc. Stain is not the only way to achieve this either – you can also use dyes, which have a much wider range of colors but can produce a different look and are harder to work with. Or you can use a combination of the two. The whole thing is more art than science. The only sure-fire way to do this is take some pieces of the actual wood and do some test stains. I’m sure you could find someone willing to do that, but they’re probably not cheap.

Mixing stains to get exactly what you want is a process of trial and error. It’ll take a couple of tries and it won’t be cheap if you have someone do it. I suggest buying a few different pints and mixing small amounts yourself to get the desired color. You’ll have to wait for the test woods to dry adter applying as the dry look will be different than the wet and it may take more than one staining application. This shouldn’t be difficult if you just need a quart for your application but I suspect most places won’t want to tackle it.
