Painted Window Frames
We are doing some painting in our house. The original wood window frames with built in shutters in one of the rooms were painted a very unattractive purplish gray at some point. We don’t know how many layers there are beneath that. At some point we may try to strip/restore them (we certainly wish they had never been painted), but that may be down the road after other more urgent projects. I have two questions that I would like the forum’s input on: (1) if we were to try to restore them, what is the best method and is it donen in-place or do the window frames need to be removed and sent off-site? Any recommendations of someone to do this job? (2) in the meantime when we paint the room is would it make things worse to add another layer that would at least match the color scheme, or will that just make our problem worse down the road? Thanks

If they have contours and detail then I recommend dipping. These details are often damaged when people try to do it themselves. Having them dipped also spares you the exposure to chemicals and lead paint. If you are going to dip them later anyway, then it doesn’t matter if you paint them now to match your space. Latex melts like butter when stripped.

I had mine dipped. They need sanding afterwards – esp. the slats.

the easiest method is to remove the side moldings and shutters and strip them in a horizontal position. The dip and strip places do a pretty good job. check listings on this site. Stripping them in place is tedious and messy.
