Oil Floor Refinisher

Tcccorcoran,  Refinishing oiled floor is easy if you know how to do it. Few facts about oil finishes – and I think you mean oil not oil base polyurethane . The many types of oil finishes on today’s market can cause confusion, especially as they become more popular. Here are a few facts: • The “oil” used as a base varies greatly. Some manufacturers use petroleum-based oil, while others use tung oil, linseed oil or vegetable-based oils. In Europe, petroleum-based products are referred to as “synthetic.” • Oils penetrate down into the wood instead of creating a film over the top like a polyurethane or waterborne finish does. • Some oil finishes, in addition to penetrating into the wood, also have ingredients such as waxes or certain oils that harden as they dry. • Oil finishes tend to bring out the grain of the wood and give it depth. there are some questions before you start : is existing floor engineered or solid floor, what species , does finish on floor contain wax or not, etc.  Refinish vs reoil.  it depends on floor condition and whether you want to use similar or different finish on the floor.  Do you have any information on what finish and brand was used on the floor? Floor needs to be checked first for what finishn is on : tung oil (different brands ), natural oil (Rubio monocoat or Bona), oil finish which contain wax, or  any other finish? Floor does not need (always) to be resended.  Floor needs to be checked for any contamination from household cleaners. Sometimes floor needs to be cleaned with special solusion to remove contaminants from the floor so finish (oil) you put on top will adhere properly to existing one.  sometimes floor needs to be resanded because of contamination on top of the floor . Sometimes even if you resend floor you cant put finish you want , like when floor was finished with wax.  please give me a call with any questions .
