looking for vintage molding

I am restoring my 1892 brownstone rowhouse in Bed/Stuy and I am missing a critical peice of “chair rail” molding, so I am putting this out there hoping for a recommend of a source.  I am looking for almost 10′ of this particular rail molding, or something similar in the same size.  It is 4 1/4″ wide and 1″ deep.  I don’t want to go the route of having it fabricated because I know how much that costs, I did that once with one other critical peice a few years ago.  Dave’s salvage business on Greene did not have it and I couldn’t find it at the flea market on Malcom X either.  Any suggestions out there.  The photo shows the horizontal peice I need. I have plenty of paint stripping and plastering to do, but having the missing molding peice would help.  Thanks.

Isn’t most molding like this built from smaller component pieces? In other words, don’t look for the whole thing because you won’t find it.

Very pretty. A bit of a needle in a haystack. If you don’t stumble upon someone with the same molding throwing it all away, your options are: Use a bunch of moldings from Dyke’s that do not match exactly, order a custom router bit made from a machine shop and then find a carpenter with a shop willing and able to run 10 feet for you, or find someone who will make a mold and fabricate it from resin for you. The latter only works if it’s painted, and making 10 feet in resin is not highly practical. Both of the latter solutions require that you send a sample to be copied. I’m wondering if maybe you could make a custom router bit of only the center piece, which would save money and make it easier for a shop to run because the router bit will be smaller, and use off the shelf moldings from Dyke’s for the other parts. We’ve had a couple router bits made from a shop in the midwest — it’s about $200 to $300\. Difficult to find a shop able to mill such big pieces. We had maybe five times the amount run at a cost of about $1,000\. Also, if you can’t find a carpenter, see if a stair maker could do this on their equipment.

Try thinking of it as three pieces instead of one. It looks as though there are two moldings (top and bottom) that are relatively standard separated by a “spacer” molding in the center that has been given a ribbed texture. You may get close but it probably won’t be an exact match. As an alternative you may think about removing/replacing the molding from a less conspicuous location to use where an exact match is critical.

My go-to guys are Spiegel Architectural Woodwork upstate, http://bit.ly/XVqD9P.  They are amazing and incredibly reasonable.  Whenever we have custom trim work done, we call them first to see if they’ve got an item similar to what we want, and half the time they’ve got something spot on, or really close, and their custom fabrication costs really are reasonable.  I sometimes trace the actual piece and email them the trace, and they can see what they’ve got that matches it.

Try dykes and decorators supply.  Both have pdf catalogs.  Dykes has less overall, but perhaps more door mouldings, and has a local store (gowanus).  Decorators supply has tens of thousands of historic moldings, largely wood onlays though.  Use their pdf catalog rather than their general webpage for looking through their inventory quickly.
