Kiln-Re-enameling a Cast Iron Tub?
Hi–Does anyone know of a service that will pick up and actually re-enamel a cast iron tub (in a kiln, not with a spray?). I’d like to recycle the tub we have rather than buy a new one but have no desire to subject myself and my family to noxious fumes every three years. Thanks!

Unfortunately, Custom Ceramic Coatings is no longer able to re-porcelain cast iron since the small chemical company supplying them has gone out of business. Unless they found a new supplier in the six months since we spoke on the phone. They are lovely people though and a delight to call — maybe call, see if their situation has changed.

you can actually get an old tub basted and refired, but it probably costs more than a new clawfoot.. http://www.customceramic.com/services.htm

Porcelain Industries seems to be offering the standard reglazing, which can be done in place and is just paint. It lasts about three years, maybe longer, if done well and you don’t use any abrasive anything on it. The only people I have heard of who will actually re-do the porcelain and bake it in a kiln like the original is an outfit in Illinois called Custom Ceramic Coatings, but they are no longer able to get the chemical for cast iron (they can still do steel). The other option is powder coating. This is the same method used onĀ cars, radiators, and industrial light fixtures. DoorSixteen used it for a sink and said it works well. A Brownstoner had a good experience with EverNu Metal Finishing on 20th St off 7th Ave. in Brooklyn. I am not sure it is practical to move a tub. They weigh something like 600 pounds. But you could call them and ask.

I can’t speak to the process (ie whether its a kiln or not – I suspect not) but http://porcelainindustries.com/ just re-did a clawfoot tub for us and it looks great.
