ISO: pocket shutter fabricator, iron fabricator and general millwork assistance

Hi all,

We’re looking to replace the pocket shutters in our house (replace, unfortunately not restore as what’s there isn’t usable) and are seeking recommendations.  We’ve contacted the folks at Shutterblinds, Heights Woodworking and St. John’s Woodworking.  Has anyone worked with these companies or others that they would recommend (or recommend against)?

Along that vein, if you’ve got someone who you would recommend for other millwork and/or iron work (we’ve got lots to restore, plus a deck to build), we’d also recommend your thoughts.  We have a general contractor who has a few recommendations, but we’d love recommendations from an owner’s perspective.

For the shutters you can’t go wrong with TheTinker’sWagon.com. Steve is just the best at this. He is very skilled, honest and responsible. We had a great experience using him.

I share your question re: a good shutter restorer/fabricator – as far as ironwork goes, though, Lopopolo Iron Works (ironworkdesigns.com), recommended here often, are great – especially for decks. They did our 2nd floor balcony with stairs down to garden and it’s perfect – looks lovely and strong as can be – also a very good price. They also restored our original garden floor gate. Highly recommended. Not sure what kind of millwok you need, but we had a great experience with Adriatic Lumber (adriaticwood.com), who were able to match our existing balusters (we had a few that were broken and wanted to math originals rather than replacing all) and a few pieces of missing wainscotting. A little pricey, but good work and lots of options. Good luck!
