How to fix scratched glass (doors & windows)?
We had our facade completely rebrownstoned this summer/fall. Overall I’m very happy with the job. But there’s a problem I’m deeply irked about. At the end of the project, the guys cleaned our windows and front doors which — unsurprisingly — were covered in concrete dust from the work. It wasn’t until a few weeks later, well after they had packed up and left, that I then washed the windows more carefully, both inside and out. Now it’s crystal clear (pun intended) that they badly scratched both our 130-yr-old front doors and our expensive replacement windows on two floors. How do I fix? And do I stand any chance of getting the masonry contractor to recompense me?

Couple of years ago we have some “scratchiti” removed from 100+ year old beveled glass front doors by Architectural Glass Solutions from Howard Beach. Cost was $275\. Came out like new. They were at 718-848-2534.

Get in contact with your contractor. Tell them how pleased you are with the facade but firmly tell them that the crew that came out damaged your windows and door. They all know that a good contractor is hard to find and most will work hard to make their customers happy so that they can get referrals. If they don’t cooperate, ask the owner to come out and look at the damage. Get more firm with them. You have nothing to lose by trying.

Thanks, all. I spoke to LWP Windows on 3rd Ave and 54th who I’ve purchased storm windows from in the past. They said polishing out scratches is very labor intensive, doesn’t always work, and can damage the glass. Also that the low-e coating may have been damaged/removed by the abrasion. Apparently since these are double-paned, gas-filled, wood windows I need to go directly to the manufacturers (Marvin and Pella) for complete replacements! Unless my insurance will cover this, I fear the end result is that I’ll have to live with it. I suspect the guys used sponges that were had sand in them. It’s maddening because their brownstone work was phenomenal. This is what so often happens with Brooklyn tradespeople. They are excellent at one specific skill, then completely f*** u* by not paying attention to something that should have been so minor like this. So frustrating!

If you have to have the glass replaced, call Vila Windows and Glass. It may be cheaper than all the rest of the hassles. i think I paid about $150 for one large thermal pane and if you need a few more they should come down in price as that was he only job they came and mesured for and returned for.

cerium oxide. there are companies equiped to use the proper felt pads to polish glass with this product. we are not one of them. it is a bit of a chore but it can be done. I have tried it with minimal success. Steve

Call the replacement window and company and ask them. Then call the contractor. Last resort would be to call your insurance, but I’m not sure if this would be covered.
