Horsehair Pipe Insulation

The pipes in our basement have what I have been describing as horsehair insulation on them. It’s a bit frayed in sections and must be causing some dust but in generally good shape. Does anyone have insight about whether it makes sense to rip it off? I presume we could buy some more modern pipe covers at a big box store. Are those more efficient and easy to buy? Picture attached. Any insight appreciated.
