Filing for MCI

Just finished major renovation on multifamily house including all mechanical systems and got bldg. down to 5 family with 2 remaining RS tenants (3 market rate).   Want to pass along as much of the capital improvements to these two low rent payers/complainers as possible.  Any recommendations on who to use to assist with this filing?  Renov. went on in 2009 and 2010 and got new C of O in 2011. I cannot afford to pay an arm and a leg to file paperwork that only yields me pennies on the rents.

I agree with the dude sans chest hair. You can file it yourself. You need to get all the paperwork together like he said. If you miss something they’ll reject it after a long delay so make sure you follow their instructions to the letter and prepare for a long wait.

I filed for a MCI in 2003\. I used an expert  who deals with DHCR to help me. And he was a big help. I don’t know if he’s still available but his name is Bruce Horowitz and his numbers at that time were 718-857-3191 (H) and 212-541-4477 (W). He charged me $300 or $400 back then.

If you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg, why not just download copies of DHCR form RA-79 and a copy of the instructions from  http://nyshcr.org/Forms/Rent/ (Delete the “<" when brownstoner sticks in the extra character in the url) Fill them out, get your contractor(s) signatures in the appropriate places, send proof of payment, copies of approvals (dob permits?), etc. and send them in yourself. You can call DHCR with questions if you need to.
