Exterior window/door painting: About how much should this cost?

We live in a corner brownstone (windows on 3 sides), 20ft wide, 4 stories. The windows and cornice have not been painted in 10 years, and I was just quoted 17,500 for exterior painting, roped into ladders, no scaffolding. I’m a new home owner, and this seems like a lot of money…anyone have any idea how much exterior painting should cost? It’s a reputable painter, who has worked in Brooklyn for 40 years. Any input, much appreciated.

I can’t imagine the materials being more than $500 dollars. So, $17,000 for labor and associated costs; seems kind of steep for a few days of work. Is he going to strip and sand everything to bare wood. Prime and paint multiple coats with a light sanding between each coat? Use the best paints available and work with you to pick out colors. Than perhaps it’s worth it, but always pay as work is finished; less you spend $17,500 and end up with mediocre work.

If; as you say this is a reputable painter that does exterior painting on a regular basis, this does not sound bad. It is a lot of work to scrape, properly cork, protect all the property around, mask the masonry from stray drips etc. There insurance costs are a night mare etc…. I am sure you can get a cheaper price, but look at the quality of other finished jobs. Too many just paint over the pealing chips and cannot cut a line to save their lives! A mess! My neighbor recently had theirs done, we ended up with a ladder through our window!, all kinds of debris and mess on our property, only then did they discover that their contractors did not have insurance for exterior ladder work above one floor..
