Convert Closet to a Bath

I’d like to get a general idea of how much it may cost to convert a closet into a small bath. The bath would be approximately 6×5 with a stand up shower on the opposite side of an existing bath. It is on the top floor of a 1910 brick townhouse. I’d like to have this done legally and to code and I’m hoping I could accomplish this for about 15K, is this reasonable?

Hello, Please do not hire anybody who will accept to work without proper filing and permits. Fair estimate for the job you mentioned is $12,000 for construction, plumbing,electrical work, with you supplying all the fixtures and tiles (that has to be added to $12,000). Also you must hire an architect who will file the job properly and the architect must have MEP (mechanical engineer) involved for proper drawings. Trying to cut corners, might save you few dollars, but from my 11 years of experience in construction it is never worth the risk. Regards, Alek

Because you are moving plumbing fixtures and walls, legally you must employ an architect or engineer and you must file permits with the city. You will need to use a licensed plumber, also. This will add some costs to your $15,000 estimate.

Rough breakdown of expenses is: 4k for minor demo & framing, 1.5k for electrical (new circuit,) 2.5k for plumbing, 2k for tiling & finish. Fixtures are 2.5k & tiles <1\. I have shower stall, no bathtub. OP, am still negotiating & not sure who to pick, I can get back later with name.

Thanks! I’m not actually sure about the soffit but its good to know that 15K is at least somewhat feasible. I’m definitely looking to go with a basic bath that is nice but not fancy. do you mind sharing the contractor who gave you an estimate?

Do you have a soffit under the bath & closet? If so, the new toilet waste pipe can be concealed. Since the plumbing appears to be on the north wall, it should be easy to extend pipe runs. 15k would be feasible if you don’t get an architect involved. I just got an estimate for about 12k for a 9×5 bath, with only minimal plumbing since there’s a bath on the other side, kinda like yours. Subway tiles, tile shower with glass door, tiled floor.
