Changing a building number?
Anyone know if you can change a BK townhouse’s building number — specifically changing a building number that **ends with an “A”** to a number that **ends with a “1/2″**? If so, through what agency? Thanks.

If you can believe it, the respective Borough President’s offices are responsible for the designation of house numbers. Check with the topographic bureau in the Brooklyn BP’s office.

I can’t imagine that change would help much, but I understand your frustration. Our last apartment before buying had a letter at the end of the number and it made all kinds of things hard (some online ordering systems wouldn’t even deliver to such an address). When we were house-hunting, having a letter or 1/2 in the address was a very big detractor and honestly factored into our decision in the end.

LOL at having to explain to someone what a fraction is. Our education system and tax dollars at work.

I suspect that a house number ending with “A” might cause almost as many problems as one ending with “1/2”. The practice of building three houses on two lots (and various similar permutations) predates the digitalization/dumbing down of record keeping. VERY sad!

May I make a suggestion about changing your house number from an “A” to a “1/2″…please don’t do it. You’re giving yourself an unnecessary headache. My house number ends in “1/2,” and it causes more problems than you can imagine. Some of them are: mis-delivery of your mail and parcels; online or telephonic transactions that cannot be completed because the systems cannot accept the fraction or the person at the other end of the phone doesn’t understand what you’re talking about when you give them your house number and try to explain what a fraction is (this happens quite often); the inability to access DOB or Finance Dept databases because the address is not “valid,” and you’ll have to remember and use your block/lot numbers to log in. If you get home delivery of your newspapers, prepare yourself to have to go next door to pick up your paper if it’s delivered at all. I cancelled home delivery of the NYT three times over the years because the carrier couldn’t get it right. Out of exasperation, I purchased the digital edition last summer. I’ve also applied for paperless billings because I’m concerned about my bills being mis-delivered or lost and potentially being used for ID theft. If anyone out there knows the answer to your question, I’d be interested myself. I would love to change my “1/2” to an “A.”
