Blue Board w/ Veneer Plaster Installers?
Hi, any recommendations for someone in Brooklyn that can install blue board with veneer plaster vs regular dry wall? see: http://www.bobvila.com/articles/361-blueboard-and-veneer-plaster-offer-old-style-look/pages/1 No one I speak to seems to know about it. We’re renovating a brownstone and seems to give a better look and feel for new walls next to old plaster & lathe.

Right, greenmt, that was my understanding as well — that the method described is not just joint compound but an actual plaster that hardens and gives a more consistent smooth finish?

USG has long published spec and instructions. The veneer plaster product here is called “Diamond Coat,” whereas most skim coating is a mix of plaster of paris and joint compound. Joint compound is soft and when wetted, returns to mud. Mixing with plaster “hot” allows successive coats in the same day, but does not make the dry surface especially resistent to dings and scratches. Veneer plaster is mostly lime, and takes much longer to cure. Bob Villa didn’t mention it, but depending on thickness and permeability of substrate, it may not be painted for days or weeks. It reacts with air to change from hydrated lime back to lime stone. This is similar to the historic finish coat of original plaster walls, which lasts way longer than sheet rock of any color.
I use “wet” materials and techniques to conserve some existing surfaces in my bathroom renovations. I patch plaster with plaster, and I reluctantly use drywall to save money and time, and where tile sizes rely on extremely flat substrate. Diamond coat is a modern mix, not the same as Victorian era finish plaster. Beware, Hydrated Lime is still caustic and burns skin, eyes and lungs.
You can find me in the Brownstoner directory under Shower Stalls – Green mountain.

Certainly every plasterer I’ve interacted with is familiar with skim coating on top of drywall. I would guess it’s the use of blue board that’s throwing them off. Being able to skip a step of primer doesn’t sound like a huge win to me.

this is really just a skim coat over drywall. the marketing shows skipping a step of a primer, so the drywall company can no doubt capture the difference in margin. looks like bob vila gets a little recapture in the form of a plug. in these situations, you go with what the skim coater is most comfortable with, as the results of a skim coat are much more about skill than a minor cost save. it is much more of a skilled trade than it appears, and results do vary – choose your skim coater well.
