Bathroom Fans

Does anyone know if bathroom fans are required by code in a gut renovation? Our architect forgot to add them in her plans and our GC is now trying to charge extra for adding them….I thought if would be obvious that our brand new bathrooms would have fans!

Contractor bids on the plans. Hard to make the GC eat the extra work if it wasn’t in the plans, unless it is a blip compared to the overall job. But you may want to go to architect and see if he will eat the extra cost because it was his mistake, assuming the change order now costs more than the bid would have increased if it included the fan in the first place. But you want to do this diplomatically, too small an issue to cause rift in trust with the architect.

what about a basement bathroom? Are we still required to build an exhaust all the way up to the roof or can we go through a window we have in the boiler room?

If there is no window; yes you need a fan. Yes it is code; I am surprised that your architect did not put it in the plans, and that your contractor did not notice while doing his bid/quote for the job!

No vent fan needed if there is a window, otherwise mechanical vent (with exhaust motor) that now must go up through roof. They used to allow side wall exhaust but now up through top only.
